What are clear braces?

Clear braces are similar to traditional metal braces, except the brackets and wires are made from a clear ceramic material making them much less visible. Ceramic braces are often used on older teenagers and adults who are concerned about the appearance of having a mouth full of metal braces. The brackets are made from a clear or tooth-colored ceramic alloy and are usually a little larger than a metal bracket.  Clear ceramic braces also require more attention during brushing and flossing. They are most often used on the upper front teeth.

The discomfort in the cheeks and gums often associated with traditional braces doesn’t occur with the clear braces because the ceramic is less abrasive than metal. Ceramic braces are stain resistant, although the dentist will change the brackets at each visit.
